Computational Chemistry encompasses numerous chemical applications of computational methods and spreads over many areas, e. g., Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry as well as Computer Science. During the last two decades many of the Computational Chemistry areas have enjoyed a significant development thanks to rapid progress in hardware and software as well as a better understanding of the basic principles. A variety of techniques for numerical and symbolic computations, using the potential offered by the present technology of computers, has been developed and these methods have opened many areas of application, as for example in modelling environmental and biological chemical processes, understanding and/or designing molecular materials with technologically important optical, magnetic and electronic properties, and screening compounds for potential therapeutic properties. Nowadays no part of chemistry escapes that ubiquitous tool of the laboratory, the computer.
