SUBJECT: |
Nature Chemical Biology Annual Symposium: The Chemical Biology of the Cell |
DATE: |
2006-11-10 |
LOCATION: |
Boston (MA), USA, North America |
CONTENT: |
Topic: Biochemistry,
Keywords: chemistry, biology, cell biology
Official Information:
Focusing on the frontier of in vivo chemical biology, the Symposium will explore how chemists and biologists are contributing concepts and tools to our understanding of the molecular basis of cell biology. In a series of five scientific sessions across two days, an international panel of speakers will examine cell biology "from the inside-out".
Session 1: The nucleus and cell division
The nucleus houses the cell’s genetic information and thus, serves as its control center. This session will feature seminars on events taking place in the nuclei of cells, including mechanisms of cell division.
Session 2: Metal ions and metabolites
The communication networks between and within cells depend on trafficking of metal ions and small molecules in the cytoplasm of the cell. This session focuses on molecular events of the cytoplasm, including metabolomics, biosynthesis and secondary metabolites, and metal ion transport and storage.
Session 3: Cytoplasmic processes
The third session moves from molecules to cytoplasmic processes of greater complexity such as secretion and signaling. The session will emphasize the application of chemical biology, systems biology and cellular imaging tools to understand diverse cytoplasmic processes.
Session 4: Membranes
The outer boundary of the cell, the plasma membrane, is the mediator of communication between the cell and its environment. This session emphasizes emerging molecular insights into membrane trafficking and membrane signaling.
Session 5: Cell and chemical biology moving forward
The closing keynote session serves as a summary of the meeting, but also examines the future of chemical biology for understanding cellular processes. Carolyn Bertozzi and James Rothman will discuss new developments and challenges for chemical biology as it explores the inner workings of the cell.
