Chemical Week and SRI
Consulting Present: The Global Petrochemical Outlook
Conference Wednesday - Thursday * October 25-26, 2006 *
Houston, TX
Petrochemical makers say they are set
for another strong year, following record- breaking
profitability in the past two years. Healthy global economic
outlooks, robust demand in developing countries, particularly
China and India, as well as delays in several large-scale
cracker complexes in the Mideast are driving optimism among
producers and analysts. Margins for basic chemicals and
plastics are above reinvestment levels worldwide, and are
expected to remain that way this year, and the next. Demand
has been stable so far this year, producers say, and
retreating feedstock costs early this year have helped expand
margins even as prices decline. Producers agree that the
outlook for supply-demand fundamentals is positive, although
views on whether the industry has hit its peak
differ.
Some headwinds for industry remain, however,
due to the effects of recent hurricanes in the U.S. Gulf, as
well as high energy and feedstock costs. The petrochemical
industry will continue to face challenges managing volatile
feedstock costs, especially for products with raw material
prices that are strongly connected to domestic natural gas or
international crude oil markets.
