Carboxylic acids were separated on a polymathacrylate-based weakly acidic cation-exchange resin (TSKgel OApak-A) using ion-exclusion chromatography. A mixture of  formic, acetic, propionic, valeric, iso-valeric, iso-butyric, and iso-caproic acids has been separated based on the ion-exclusion/adsorption mechanism.   A combination of ion-exclusion  chromatography with uv-photodiode array, conductivity and APCI-MS detection was used.  A mobile phase consisting of 0.5mM H2SO4 /10% methanol (pH=ca 3.0) was used to separate and detect the mixture of the carboxylic acids. The carboxylic acids were separated and identified, using (APCI) interface in the negative ionization mode.  Methanol with nitrogen sheath gas yield the best result. Addition of methanol to the eluent reduced the retention times of the carboxylic acid with hydrophobic nature. Selective ion monitoring (SIM) acquisition mode was used for the LC-MS. The method was applied to the analysis of carboxylic acids in real samples.
