Algeria is the second largest natural gas exporter to Europe (after Russia). The country is also considered to be underexplored and is believed to contain vast hydrocarbon potential. For over a decade the energy sector has been open to foreign investment and there have been a number of significant new oil and gas discoveries in the last few years, largely by foreign companies.
